AT the 19th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin called for stronger regional solidarity to address maritime, cyber, and digital threats, emphasising that ASEAN’s stability depends on collective action and adaptability.

ASEAN’s strength lies in its unity, particularly when facing regional and global uncertainties, according to Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Speaking at the opening of the 19th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, he stressed that security at sea, in the digital realm, and in cyberspace is not solely ASEAN’s responsibility, but a universal one.

"When any one of us is challenged, all of us are being tested. Solidarity cannot be selective," he said.

Mohamed Khaled underlined that only through cohesion and coordinated action can ASEAN maintain its position as a stable, neutral region free from external influence.

He also called on the ADMM to evolve in line with contemporary security realities, including the rising threat of cyber-attacks.

"Cybersecurity is now as important as maritime security, therefore member states need to strengthen cooperation in technology foresight, cybersecurity, and joint defence innovation," he said.

“We cannot neglect any aspect of security, whether on land, at sea, or in cyberspace. Non-state actors now use technology to disrupt stability and target critical infrastructure through cyber attacks and the spread of misinformation,” he added.

Mohamed Khaled expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s role in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, urging the swift establishment of an ASEAN Observer Force.

He concluded by emphasising that internal cohesion and external openness are ASEAN’s true strengths, ensuring the regional bloc remains relevant and serves as a key bulwark of peace in Southeast Asia. - October 31, 2025
