POLICE have arrested a married couple suspected of involvement in a drug trafficking syndicate and seized methamphetamine worth more than RM2.8 million during a raid in Taiping on Wednesday.
Perak Police Chief, Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, said the operation, carried out by the state’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN), was conducted at 5.15 p.m. following intelligence and public reports.
“A 39-year-old man was initially detained by the roadside near Pokok Assam market on suspicion of drug distribution. Following interrogation, he led police to a rented house in Taman Assamara, where a 26-year-old local woman, his wife, was also arrested,” he told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters.
During the search, police found six transparent plastic packages containing five kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, alongside 84.75 litres of liquid believed to contain drugs.
Various equipment and chemicals used to reprocess lower-grade methamphetamine for resale were also seized.
“The total value of the drugs is estimated at RM2,874,038.40. Investigations indicate the syndicate has been active since August, with the seized drugs capable of supplying approximately 51,486 users. The narcotics were believed destined for distribution outside Perak,” Noor Hisam added.
Urine tests revealed the husband, a lorry driver, tested positive for methamphetamine, while his wife, a housewife, tested negative.
Investigations also showed the husband had two prior criminal and drug-related records, whereas his wife had no previous record.
Police additionally confiscated a Honda City belonging to the husband’s brother-in-law and a Nissan Navara owned by the wife, with a combined value of around RM100,000.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.
The couple has been remanded for a week until 5 November to assist with further investigations.
Noor Hisam emphasised, “This success reflects the effectiveness of continuous intelligence operations and close cooperation with the public.
“Police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug distribution. Possessing, distributing, or protecting drug activities is a serious offence under the law. We remain committed to combating drugs to safeguard current and future generations.” - October 31, 2025
