THE Ministry of Public Works is set to introduce external audits for highway concession companies from the start of next year, in a bid to guarantee that road maintenance work adheres to the highest standards.
Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Public Works, said the move will shift oversight from internal auditors within the Public Works Department or the concession companies themselves to independent external auditors.
“Early next year, many concession contracts will expire. Companies handling road maintenance will be audited from time to time by external auditors. We are seeking external assistance to ensure the work is completed to the best possible standard,” he said during a press conference at the launch of the Malaysia Road Maintenance Convention (MRMC) 2025 and the MY-ASEAN Road and Traffic Technology Expo (My-ARTTE) 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur.
Nanta emphasised that the convention highlights the importance of road upkeep in Malaysia, stressing that infrastructure is not just about construction. “We do not want a situation where inadequate maintenance causes our roads to deteriorate quickly,” he said.
MRMC and My-ARTTE 2025 provide a strategic platform for road sector stakeholders to shape the future of mobility and highway connectivity in ASEAN.
The events bring together government agencies, industry leaders, technology providers, and innovators to foster collaboration, share best practices, and integrate smart technology solutions towards a safer and smarter infrastructure network in the region.
Speaking at the launch, Nanta highlighted the role of the National 2030 Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Master Plan in accelerating the integration of smart transport systems, real-time data monitoring, and AI-based maintenance solutions across Malaysia’s national network.
“We are also advancing sustainable engineering through eco-friendly materials, recycled asphalt, and energy-efficient construction methods, ensuring our infrastructure supports economic goals and environmental sustainability.
“This is how we prepare Malaysia’s infrastructure for the future – letting technology drive intelligence, and intelligence drive progress,” he said.
The minister added that the ministry has outlined three strategic priorities to shape national infrastructure policy for the next decade: digital integration, sustainable engineering, and collaborative innovation. - November 3, 2025
