CAMBODIA remains steadfast in continuing the peace process with Thailand despite Bangkok’s decision to suspend the implementation of the bilateral peace agreement following a recent landmine explosion that injured two Thai soldiers near the border.
Armed Forces Chief, General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, said Thailand’s National Security Council was currently holding discussions on the matter.
“Our position is that we want to ensure the peace process is not disrupted, as it involves many timelines and, if delayed, could return to the previous tense situation. We hope the peace process can continue.
“We understand there will be a cooling-off period to allow time to assess the current situation,” he told Buletin TV3 today.
Mohd Nizam said the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) remained stationed more than 40 kilometres from the site of the explosion and was not permitted to approach the affected area.
He added that should the situation escalate as it had in the past, the AOT personnel stationed in both countries would be redeployed to Phnom Penh and Bangkok.
In the latest incident, the landmine explosion in Thailand’s Sisaket province left one soldier seriously injured in the leg, while another suffered chest pains due to the blast’s impact. - November 11, 2025
