ALLEGATIONS that a network of fake social media accounts was created to generate positive perception of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are unsubstantiated, the Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching, has said.
Teo told Parliament on Wednesday that social media platform provider Meta had issued a statement confirming no abnormal activity had been detected on the Prime Minister’s Facebook page.
“I often say that many fake accounts are created to promote scams, and Reuters has reported that 10 per cent of advertising revenue comes from scammers.
“But in this case, Meta has issued a statement confirming there is no abnormal activity, so I believe we must accept their statement,” she said during a session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The Deputy Minister was responding to a supplementary question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) on whether the government would summon media outlets that claimed a network of 263 fake accounts was being used to boost support for the Prime Minister online.
Nie Ching clarified that the government had not called on the media to provide evidence, emphasising that it respects press freedom.
“Even if the government disagrees with the content published, it does not mean media must be summoned each time. We express our position, but summoning media could also be criticised as interfering with press freedom,” she said. - November 12, 2025
