TWO men have been arrested in connection with a viral video showing a male macaque being slapped and slammed, authorities confirmed.

The suspects, aged 24 and 28, were apprehended at 10pm on Friday during a police raid in the Jelawang area, following public complaints and widespread condemnation from netizens and animal welfare organisations.

Both men were brought before the Kota Bharu Magistrate’s Court on Saturday for a remand application. Magistrate Amin Rashidi Ramli approved a four-day remand until Tuesday.

Bachok District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohamad Ismail Jamluddin, confirmed the arrests to Sinar Harian.

The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Animals Act 1953 for acts of cruelty or causing harm to animals, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the dissemination of obscene content on social media.

Earlier reports indicated that the incident, captured in a 1-minute 45-second video, was shared on Facebook by the Malaysian Stray Animal Association on Friday, igniting outrage among the public and advocacy groups. - November 15, 2025
