BARISAN Nasional candidates have been reminded to exercise caution in their language and avoid offensive remarks, following a past incident in which a Kedah state assemblyman was accused of belittling the people of Sabah.
BN Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki emphasised that Sabah is a state celebrated for its harmony and multicultural diversity, and any statements that demean its citizens have no place in the party’s political culture.
“Sabah is the most harmonious state in every aspect. People may hold differing views, yet they live together in peace,” Dr Asyraf told reporters during a Titik Temu community engagement programme in Kampung Bakau recently.
“Never bring in a coarse, foreign political culture, and never demean the dignity of Sabah’s people with remarks that belittle them.”
He stressed that BN candidates should respect the culture and sensitivities of Sabah’s residents, who are known for tolerance and coexistence despite differing perspectives.
The Secretary-General also highlighted that BN leadership consistently advises candidates to steer clear of campaigns marred by slander, abuse, or attempts to disparage opponents.
Instead, candidates should focus on showcasing BN’s track record and the tangible contributions the party has made to the people.
“We focus on what UMNO and BN will deliver. We present evidence of what we have already accomplished. There is no need for lofty promises; what matters is demonstrating our commitment to the people,” he said.
Dr Asyraf further advised candidates to engage extensively with voters, reaching out to all communities regardless of political affiliation. “Do not think that some people are ‘ours’ and others are not. Everyone has the potential to vote for us. They may have originally been with BN; we just need to engage them wisely,” he added.
When asked about Sabah’s role within BN, Dr Asyraf described the state as a key stronghold, integral to the party’s strength. “BN has never been defeated in Sabah; the 2018 setback was due to betrayal. The people of Sabah still remember BN’s contributions to developing the state over more than 35 years. That is why we return to the people with the principle of ‘Bikin Baik Sabah’,” he said. - November 16, 2025
