POLICE have indicated today that a personal dispute may be the motive behind the assault on sports journalist Haresh Deol in Bangsar on Tuesday.

Brickfields District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook, said investigations suggest the incident was primarily personal in nature.

“The case is still under investigation and the public is urged not to speculate until the inquiry is complete,” he stated on Wednesday.

Authorities have confirmed that a 37-year-old unemployed local man was arrested in connection with the assault.

The suspect was detained at Taman Ikan Emas at approximately 2am on Wednesday. He is currently held on a three-day remand to assist police investigations under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code.

Chang Hook added that police received a report from Haresh, who also works for an online news portal, at 4pm on Tuesday at the Bangsar Police Post.

The assault reportedly occurred on Jalan Maarof near the parking area of a shopping centre while Haresh was walking along the pavement towards Jalan Telawi. - November 26, 2025
