FORMER Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, and businessman Albert Tei are set to be charged in the Sessions Court here tomorrow following an accelerated investigation into allegations of corruption.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, confirmed that both men will initially face four charges each under the MACC Act 2009, with an additional charge awaiting them at the Shah Alam Sessions Court on Friday.
Azam said the probe, opened on 26 November after a report by an online news portal, was immediately categorised as a matter of public interest due to its involvement of a senior government figure and widespread national and international attention.
“The investigation into Shamsul Iskandar and Albert Tei has been completed. Both individuals will face several charges under the MACC Act,” he said at a press conference at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. He later clarified that each would face five counts in total.
Three individuals were detained during the investigation, namely Shamsul, Tei and Sofia Rini Buyong. Azam confirmed that Sofia would not be charged. “However, Sofia will not be charged and will instead serve as a prosecution witness,” he said.
He added that MACC officers had worked under a tight directive to conclude the probe within a week, interviewing 32 witnesses besides the three detainees.
“All these witnesses have given their statements, and they will be notified should they be required to appear in court,” he said. “I extend my appreciation to all officers who worked tirelessly to complete this investigation.”
In tomorrow’s proceedings before the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, Shamsul is expected to be charged with receiving gratification under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, while Tei will face corresponding charges of giving gratification under Section 17(b).
Both men are expected to return to court in Shah Alam on Friday to face a further single charge each, marking the expanding scope of what has become one of the most closely watched corruption cases involving a former senior aide to the Prime Minister. - December 3, 2025
