A 30-YEAR-OLD teacher pleaded not guilty today at the Sessions Court in George Town to charges of attempting to murder his wife last August.
Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin Muhamad Zubairi entered the plea after the charge was read out before Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin.
He is accused of attacking his 28-year-old wife, Hanis Sofea Hamdan, with a knife at their home in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, at approximately 5.45 a.m. on 27 August, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Asma’ ‘Amirah Shahidani informed the court that Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin’s psychiatric report had been completed and handed over to the defence. She opposed bail, citing the gravity of the offence and the need to protect the victim.
The defence, led by lawyer Muhaimin Hashim with assistance from Yazid Khairul Azman and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan, requested the court exercise discretion to grant bail.
They argued that their client, still employed as a teacher, faced the risk of dismissal from public service if not granted bail.
Muhaimin also noted that Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin had been receiving psychiatric treatment for major depressive disorder, including medication such as mirtazapine, from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Perak.
“If bail is granted, he is willing to comply with additional conditions, including reporting monthly to the nearest police station,” the lawyer said.
Judge Ahzal Fariz subsequently allowed bail of RM15,000 with one surety, imposing conditions that the accused report to the nearest police station once a month, surrender his passport to the court, and refrain from contacting the victim throughout the proceedings.
The court fixed 6 January 2026 for the submission of documents and case mention. - December 4, 2025
