A Member of Parliament in Kedah was briefly detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Thursday in connection with allegations of corruption involving a state-managed cattle farming initiative, before being released on bail following an initial statement.
The lawmaker declined comment when approached by reporters on an investigation reportedly linked to the Kedah Rubber City project, a multi-faceted state programme aimed at advancing rubber processing and livestock farming capabilities.
Sources confirmed that the detention follows a probe initiated in February, centred on allegations that the MP received approximately RM400,000 in return for facilitating the allocation of land-use rights for the state government’s feedlot project.
“An investigation file was opened following a complaint lodged on 10 February 2025. The inquiry into this case has involved statements from 15 witnesses,” a source stated on Friday.
Confirming the detention, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki noted that the said MP was questioned under Section 53(3) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 before being released on bail.
The case forms part of a broader commission scrutiny into the alleged misuse of state resources in Kedah, reflecting intensified efforts to clamp down on corruption at both political and administrative levels.
Sources told The Vives.com that the MP, formerly a rising politician with PKR, defected to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in 2020 while serving as a state assemblyman.
He subsequently won the parliamentary seat in a 2022 by-election following the death of the incumbent from PKR.
Authorities continue to investigate, with decisions on potential formal charges expected after reviewing the statements of the MP and the witnesses involved. - December 5, 2025
