KUALA LUMPUR – Sarawak is expecting to host 1,000 guests at a New Year’s Eve countdown event at Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching, against federal directives.

State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was quoted as saying that authorities will ensure the event is held according to the SOPs, such as allowing only up to 50% capacity per venue.

“The indoor stadium can accommodate 5,000 people but we will only allow the 1,000 people who have been invited, including the frontliners who had worked so hard in the fight against Covid-19 in the state,” Free Malaysia Today reported him as saying.

“Previously, we always organised it (countdown event) at the Kuching Waterfront where the public can join us.

“But, this year, we decided to do it in the indoor stadium so as to adhere to the SOPs strictly.”

He told reporters that he is aware of yesterday’s directive as announced by Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Ismail Sabri had said that large-scale New Year’s Eve parties are not allowed.
