FAMILIES must be reinforced as the primary safeguard and foundation in addressing the pressures of modern life, especially in today’s digital era, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has said.
The chairperson of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Amal Silaturrahim Isteri-Isteri Harapan Malaysia (KASIH Malaysia) highlighted that contemporary challenges can affect family relationships and shape future generations.
She stressed that the family is not only the nearest social unit but also the cornerstone for building a harmonious society and a prosperous nation.
“In family life, there is no one-size-fits-all standard operating procedure. Each family faces its own unique challenges, and life itself is a test that requires wisdom and patience,” Wan Azizah said during the Madani Family Inspiration Seminar at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) today.
She noted that while previous generations faced different challenges, today’s children are exposed to an overwhelming amount of information, including content that may negatively influence their minds if not properly filtered.
“This is where the family’s role becomes crucial as the primary monitor,” she added.
Wan Azizah further emphasised that family well-being extends beyond physical and emotional aspects, encompassing spiritual and intellectual development, which must be nurtured in a balanced manner.
“We aspire to build families founded on compassion, peace of mind, and faith. Yet the reality is that life’s pressures, career demands, and economic challenges often compromise quality time spent together,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of comprehensive planning to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable groups across the country.
Malaysia is projected to become an ageing nation by 2048, with more than 14 per cent of its population aged 65 and above.
“We need a holistic approach that involves the entire country, including the implementation of the National Ageing Action Plan 2025-2045, while also considering the unique circumstances of Sabah and its communities,” Wan Azizah said.
She concluded by stressing that there is no universal solution to all family and societal challenges. Instead, each family and community must identify the most suitable approaches according to their specific needs and context. - December 13, 2025
