A TOTAL of 20 members of the Rames Gang, who have been active in organised crime syndicates in Kedah and Penang since last year, were charged at the Sungei Petani Sessions Court today.
No plea was recorded after the charges against all the accused, aged between 24 and 42, were read out by an interpreter in Tamil before Judge Najwa Che Mat.
The accused are G Magen, S Tanesh, R Shargunan, S Kanesram, V Mathavan, J Thanes, V Yanasegar, Paramasivan, G Yuvaraj, M Ponggiswaran, P Puganeswaran, S Nagarajan, R Gobinath, R Kumaresan, R Puvaneswaran, P Kathiresan, K Kesavan, S Delhipraj, V Navin Kumar and T Vivegananth.
According to the charges, all the accused were found to be members of the organised crime group 'Rames Gang' at the address of Kampung Sungai Division in the Kuala Muda District, Kedah between January 2024 and December 4, 2025.
Following this, they were charged with committing an offence under Section 130V (1) of the Penal Code which, if convicted, carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim, while the accused was represented by lawyers RSN Rayer, S Meharaj, P Vaasudevan and Muhammad Adam Burhanudeen.
Rayer then asked the court to set an expedited re-mention date for the case and requested permission for family members to meet the accused after some of them were detained for more than a month.
The court allowed family members who were present to meet the accused under strict police supervision.
The judge set January 29 as the re-mention date and did not allow any bail for all the accused.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) Director, Datuk M Kumar, at his press conference, announced that his party had successfully dismantled the Rames Gang, an organised crime group that was active in committing various violent crimes in Kedah and Penang.
In the operation by Bukit Aman, the Kedah Contingent Headquarters (IPK) Special Police Unit and the Bukit Aman Special Branch, the police arrested all male suspects aged between 24 and 42 from 27 November to 4 December.
The group is believed to consist of 35 people led by a local known as Rames and is active in Sungai Petani, Kulim and several locations in Penang.
They are believed to be involved in various violent crimes including robbery, causing serious injury, murder and drug trafficking and asking for protection money. – December 30, 2025
