HIGHWAY users will enjoy savings on travel costs, as the government has announced a 50 percent toll discount for two days in conjunction with the 2026 Deepavali celebrations.

The discount will take effect from midnight on Friday, November 6, and will end at 11:59 pM on Saturday, November 7.

Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that this initiative is being continued as part of the government’s efforts to ease the financial burden on the public, particularly those planning to travel back to their hometowns or visit family for the festival.

According to him, the implementation of this discount is estimated to entail compensation payments totaling RM20.11 million to the relevant highway concessionaires, with the cost to be borne by the government, subject to the verification of traffic data.

“This decision reflects the concern and ongoing commitment of the MADANI Government to safeguard the welfare and well-being of the people, regardless of race, religion, or belief,” he stated in a statement.

The discount applies to Class 1 private vehicles at all toll plazas, as well as Class 2 vehicles on the Penang Bridge.

However, this facility does not extend to two national border toll plazas: the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) Toll Plaza on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and the Tanjung Kupang (TTK) Toll Plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link Expressway (LINKEDUA).

Nanta expressed hope that this initiative would help alleviate travel costs, particularly for the Hindu community returning to their hometowns or visiting family members to celebrate Deepavali.

The implementation of the discount will be coordinated by the Ministry of Works (KKR) through the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), in collaboration with the respective highway concessionaires.

Meanwhile, highway users are advised to plan their journeys in advance to avoid traffic congestion. – November 5, 2026
