A TOTAL of 122 extension projects are scheduled for implementation across Penang in 2026, covering public infrastructure, community amenities and special economic initiatives that the state government hopes will be executed smoothly.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the scale and importance of the projects require integrated cooperation between state and federal departments and implementing agencies, guided by a shared sense of responsibility to ensure the success of high-impact initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
“As a rapidly developing state, the need for modern infrastructure and efficient public transport systems is becoming increasingly urgent,” he said.
“Good mobility not only boosts productivity and the state’s competitiveness, but also contributes to a better quality of life and a more sustainable environment for future generations,” he said in his New Year 2026 message.
In this regard, Chow said he was looking forward to the implementation of major projects such as the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway, the construction of pillars for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit project, the expansion of Penang International Airport, as well as other initiatives driven through state–federal collaboration.
In parallel with efforts to strengthen high-value industrial growth, Chow said the rollout of strategic projects such as the Penang IC Design and Digital Park, the Penang Chip Design Academy and the Silicon Research and Incubation Space is expected to create more high-income jobs and attract investment from global technology companies.
He said that as a state with a mature industrial, services and tourism ecosystem, Penang has strong potential to uplift household incomes by supporting micro, small and medium enterprises, the social economy, local entrepreneurship and jobs requiring both high- and mid-level skills.
Initiatives such as upskilling and reskilling programmes, support for gig workers and the empowerment of urban and rural communities would ensure that economic growth is not confined to large investments alone, but is felt directly by households and local communities, he added.
“This can be driven through the green economy, creative industries, digital technology and social innovation, which open up new job opportunities without harming the environment, while emphasising a balance between economic growth, social justice and sustainability,” he said.
“Penang can build an economy that is not only globally competitive, but also ensures that every family lives with dignity, safety and well-being by 2030,” he added.
As he enters his final term as Chief Minister, Chow said he was grateful and proud to witness Penang continue to move forward and play a significant role in national development.
He said the state’s strength lies not only in its strategic location and rich historical heritage, but also in the spirit and capability of its people to drive sustainable, competitive and inclusive economic growth while remaining resilient in the face of change.
“Guided by the Penang 2030 Vision: A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation, and aligned with the Malaysia MADANI framework, the state government remains committed to charting a balanced and comprehensive development direction,” he said. - December 31, 2025
