MALAYSIA’S newly appointed Chief of the Army, General Datuk Azhan Md Othman, has stressed the importance of composure, unity and discipline among army personnel as the country navigates current and emerging security challenges.
Commenting on the prevailing situation, he urged all members of the Malaysian Army to remain steady and cohesive, expressing confidence in the force’s ability to manage any challenges that arise.
“I am confident the situation can be brought under control. Whatever challenges emerge should serve as lessons for us to further strengthen unity and ensure that national security is always safeguarded,” he said.
General Azhan was speaking to reporters after inspecting the Guard of Honour during the Chief of Army Main Guard of Honour ceremony at Wisma Pertahanan on Tuesday.
He was officially appointed as the 31st Chief of the Malaysian Army with effect from 1 January 2026, in accordance with the decision of the 631st Armed Forces Council meeting held on 19 November 2025, and with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, granted on 1 December 2025.
The ceremony was officiated by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and witnessed by the Acting Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, Admiral Tan Sri Zulhelmy Ithnain.
Expressing gratitude for the trust and honour placed in him, General Azhan described the responsibility of leading the Malaysian Army as a significant mandate.
“I believe this duty is a heavy responsibility because the Army is the largest formation within the Malaysian Armed Forces. I am committed to carrying out this responsibility to the best of my ability with the support of all Army personnel and the people of Malaysia,” he said.
He outlined that the central focus of his leadership would be on strengthening the Army’s preparedness and operational capabilities in line with the direction of the Future Force 2030 initiative.
“This year marks an important initial phase. Many improvements need to be implemented, particularly in refining the Army’s core roles so that it remains relevant and effective in addressing current security challenges,” he added. - January 6, 2025
