BARISAN Nasional (BN) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding political stability, driving development, and prioritising the welfare of Sabahans as part of the state’s unity government, said Sabah BN liaison chief Datuk Jafry Ariffin.
“Throughout the 14-day campaign period, BN will focus on a people-oriented and fact-based approach, providing opportunities for the public to engage directly with the candidates and understand their vision, mission, and development plans,” he said following the completion of the nomination process for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections at Dewan Sri Lamag.
“This approach emphasises active listening, clear communication, and concrete solutions to local issues, in line with BN’s principles of effective and forward-looking leadership,” added Jafry, who also serves as Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister.
New Straist Times cited him saying that the coalition had carefully selected candidates with strong leadership qualities, wide acceptance within the local communities, and the capability to serve effectively.
Mohd Naim Kurniawan, BN’s nominee for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat, was described as “bringing the energy of a progressive younger generation and being closely attuned to the aspirations of the people,” while Mohd Ismail Ayob, contesting the Lamag state seat, was noted for his experience and deep understanding of local needs.
“I call upon all party machinery members as well as the people of Kinabatangan and Lamag to give their full support to BN’s candidates for the sake of continued development, political stability, and a more well-planned and prosperous future,” Jafry said.
The Kinabatangan contest has attracted three candidates: Mohd Naim, Parti Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman, and independent contender Goldam Hamid. In Lamag, Mohd Ismail faces a straight fight against Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek.
The dual by-elections were triggered by the death of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on Dec 5, shortly after he secured a second term as Lamag state assemblyman. The Election Commission has scheduled early voting on Jan 20, with polling day set for Jan 24. - January 10, 2026
