PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed his heartfelt wishes to the Indian community in Malaysia, with particular reference to the Tamil population, ahead of the Ponggal celebrations.

He described the festival as a time to give thanks for the abundance of the harvest and noted its marking of the Thai month in the Tamil calendar.

Anwar expressed his hope that this year’s celebrations would be observed with joy, harmony, and meaningful moments shared with family and loved ones.

“Ponggal also reminds us of the values of gratitude, togetherness, and mutual respect. Even though we may have differing views, backgrounds, or beliefs, understanding and respect remain the glue that binds a harmonious society and strengthens national unity,” he said in a post on his official Facebook page.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the spirit of togetherness celebrated during Ponggal should continue to be reinforced as Malaysia strives to build a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive nation.

“Such unity and gratitude are essential in shaping a country that is safe, prosperous, and thriving for all,” he added, reinforcing the festival’s broader message of cohesion in Malaysia’s multicultural society. - January 14, 2026
