AN unexploded aerial bomb weighing 227 kilogrammes was uncovered by construction workers during earthworks at a project site in Kampung Air Panas Bemban, Jasin, on Wednesday, triggering security measures by police after the device was confirmed to be still active.

Jasin district police chief Superintendent Lee Robert said authorities were alerted to the discovery at about 3pm.

According to him, the report was lodged by a 52-year-old man who was working at the project site at the time of the incident.

“The complainant informed us that he had found an object suspected to resemble a bomb while carrying out excavation works at the project site.

“Initial investigations conducted by the Weapons Unit of the Melaka Police Contingent Headquarters together with the Jasin District Police Headquarters confirmed that the object was an aerial bomb weighing 500 pounds (227 kilogrammes),” he said in a statement.

Lee said the bomb, which was discovered buried in the ground, measured between 27 and 36 centimetres in circumference and was approximately 45 inches in length.

“Further inspection found that the bomb is still active and in a corroded condition.

“The bomb is scheduled to be destroyed on Thursday at 8am in accordance with the standard operating procedures to ensure the safety of the public and the surrounding area,” he said.

He also urged members of the public not to speculate on the incident in ways that could cause unnecessary alarm or disrupt public order.

The public has also been advised to give their full cooperation to the police throughout the disposal operation, he added. - January 15, 2026
