UMNO has clarified that the formation of a so-called “grand collaboration” is neither a political partnership nor an attempt to undermine or replace the Unity Government.
UMNO information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the initiative is intended as a forum for consultation and collaboration based on shared issues, particularly those concerning the interests of Malays and Islam.
She explained that the proposed collaboration is meant to create structured space for dialogue among Malays, who form the majority of the population, and to address common concerns in a mature and inclusive manner.
“This effort also goes beyond the boundaries of partisan politics, involving the consideration of views from non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and various stakeholders who share the aspiration of strengthening the position of Malays and Islam within the framework of a plural society,” she said.
Azalina said UMNO viewed the initiative as a serious responsibility, given the party’s standing within the federal administration.
“UMNO takes this responsibility seriously because UMNO is the only Malay party that has legitimacy, authority and a position within the government. Political differences are not a reason not to stand together for the survival of a race and a religion.
“It is to bring the agenda of Malay and Islamic interests into the framework of national administration in a legitimate and effective manner,” she said in a statement on Saturday.
The clarification follows remarks by UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who, during his winding-up speech at the 2025 UMNO General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, expressed the party’s intention to form a grand collaboration to unite Malay and Islamic political forces in the country.
Azalina added that UMNO remains firmly committed to national stability, unity among Malaysians and the continuity of the Unity Government, in order to safeguard its responsibilities to religion, race and the nation.
She also said party delegates had expressed clear agreement with Ahmad Zahid’s proposal during the general assembly.
She noted that support for the idea was voiced three times on the conference floor, reflecting broad consensus among delegates.
“This shows a shared understanding that discussions of this nature must be conducted in a mature and responsible manner,” she said. - January 18, 2026
