A BOMB believed to be a remnant from World War II was discovered in a plantation at FELDA Bukit Senggeh, Nyalas here yesterday, triggering a swift response by police bomb disposal units.
The explosive device was found by a 53-year-old plantation worker at about noon while he was replanting oil palm trees.
The man reportedly noticed an object resembling a bomb while planting a sapling and immediately lodged a report at the Nyalas police station.
Jasin district police chief Superintendent Lee Robert said investigations by the Weapons Unit of the Melaka police contingent headquarters, together with personnel from the Jasin district police headquarters, confirmed that the object was an unexploded ordnance.
“Investigations by the Weapons Unit of the Melaka police contingent headquarters, together with the Jasin district police headquarters, subsequently confirmed that the object was an unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the form of an aerial bomb,” he said in a statement last night.
Lee said the bomb weighed 500 pounds and measured 101.6 centimetres in length with a circumference of 66.04 centimetres. He added that it was still active and showed signs of corrosion.

He said preparatory operations at the site began at 2.45pm, before the explosive device was successfully destroyed in a controlled operation at 6pm.
