PARTI Amanah Negara (AMANAH) has called for fair and balanced discussions on the allocation of seats between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) ahead of potential state elections in Melaka and Johor, stressing that negotiations should reflect the spirit of the Perpaduan Government.
Amanah’s Communications Director Khalid Abdul Samad said the current political landscape in both states shows a majority of state assembly seats held by BN representatives following previous political developments.
“If the Melaka and Johor state elections are held, as a joint effort within the Perpaduan Government, seat negotiations must be conducted fairly and equitably for all parties,” he stated during a press conference on Sunday after officiating the New Year Address at the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) headquarters.
Khalid emphasised that giving automatic priority to incumbents is no longer appropriate, as it could disadvantage other coalition parties.
“If we continue using the incumbent policy, it is clearly unfair. We hope UMNO and BN will be open to ceding some seats they currently hold to partners within the government,” he added.
He warned that should negotiations fail to reach an agreement, Amanah might consider whether to maintain support for the existing approach or test public support through a three-cornered contest.
“Our decision depends on the stance of UMNO and BN. Once they clarify their position, we will determine our next step,” Khalid said.
The party also affirmed its readiness to contest the Melaka and Johor state elections whenever they are called.
The call comes shortly after UMNO President and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi predicted that the Melaka polls could take place within the next two to ten months, urging state party leaders to maintain their strong performance following a previous election in which UMNO won over three-quarters of the seats. - January 25, 2026
