THE Malaysian Prisons Department has confirmed that it has fully entrusted investigations into allegations of misconduct and corruption involving prison officers to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the department said it had taken note of media reports concerning an operation carried out by the MACC at Bintulu Prison that involved several of its officers.
“The department views seriously any allegation of misconduct and corruption involving any officer and will provide full cooperation to the MACC in assisting the investigation,” the statement said.
The department added that it respected the investigative process currently being conducted by the relevant authorities and would not interfere with ongoing proceedings.
“The Malaysian Prisons Department will take further action at the departmental level based on the outcome of the investigation and in accordance with relevant laws,” it said.
The statement also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to upholding high standards of integrity, professionalism and governance within the prison service.
“The department remains committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity, professionalism and good governance in its services and will not compromise on any form of misconduct,” it added.
Earlier, a local news portal reported that 11 enforcement officers from the facility had been remanded to assist in investigations into suspected corruption.
The MACC had applied for remand orders at the Bintulu Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Six suspects were remanded for four days until Friday, four others were remanded for five days until Sunday, while one suspect was remanded for three days until Thursday.
According to the portal, preliminary investigations indicate that the alleged acts of corruption took place between 2020 and 2025, involving sums ranging from RM2,400 to RM45,000.
The money was allegedly solicited from inmates’ family members in exchange for ensuring security and facilitating matters related to prisoners. - February 4, 2026
