ALL four party presidents within the Perikatan Nasional coalition, including BERSATU president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, have confirmed they will attend a special meeting of the Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council to determine the appointment of a new chairman.
Perikatan Nasional deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the extraordinary meeting is expected to be held after 19 February, with formal notifications already sent to all four party leaders two days ago.
“However, we are still finalising the date. I have contacted all party presidents under PN, and all four presidents have confirmed that they can attend. None have opted out,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Parliament Media Centre on Thursday.
Takiyuddin said the meeting would take place before the end of the month, although one of the party presidents had requested that it not be scheduled earlier than 19 February.
“Everyone needs to be present, but we have yet to fix the date. It will not go beyond this month. I sent out the notifications two days ago and all have acknowledged receipt. Some have proposed suitable dates, while one president requested that it not be earlier than 19 February. The others have yet to propose dates,” he said.
Earlier, Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary-general, had indicated that the new PN chairman is expected to be selected from among the coalition’s senior or top leadership.
The leadership selection follows Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN chairman, which took effect on 1 January. His departure was subsequently followed by the resignation of PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, as well as several BERSATU state PN leaders.
In the aftermath, PAS expressed its readiness to lead the coalition, with its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang calling for a Supreme Council meeting to address the leadership vacuum.
The upcoming meeting is expected to be a pivotal moment for the opposition coalition as it seeks to stabilise its leadership and chart its direction moving forward. - February 5, 2026
