A LARGE tree fell across Jalan Mount Erskine in Georgetown shortly after midnight, crushing two cars but leaving all three occupants unharmed.
The vehicles involved were a Perodua Viva and a Perodua Bezza. The incident prompted a rapid response from the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, which received the call at 12.08am. Seven firefighters from the Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to clear the scene.
John Sagun Francis, Deputy Director of Operations at the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, explained that the rescue team, fully equipped in protective gear, used specialised tools to cut and remove the fallen tree to prevent further obstruction.
“Upon arrival, we found that the incident involved a tree that had toppled onto two cars, a Perodua Viva and a Perodua Bezza. The rescue team, wearing full PPE, carefully cut the tree using specialised equipment to ensure it did not become a further hazard,” he said in a statement today.
All three individuals in the vehicles managed to exit safely. Two were in the Perodua Viva, and the third was the driver of the Perodua Bezza.
The operation was carried out with assistance from the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The rescue and clearance operation concluded at 3.29am. - February 15, 2025
