AS the Lunar New Year approaches on 17 February 2026, Malaysia enters the rare and powerful Year of the Fire Horse, a convergence of zodiac and elemental forces that appears only once every six decades.

Traditionally, the Horse represents peak Yang energy, aligned with the south, the midday sun and the height of summer. When intensified by the Fire element, this signals a year of accelerated change, ambition and transformative energy.

Feng shui expert Master Lee Cheng Hoe describes 2026 as a period of “Refining Gold Through Fire”, warning that nations will confront heightened pressures, rapid shifts and disruptive events.

Yet he believes Malaysia possesses underlying strengths that, if harnessed, could turn potential turbulence into an opportunity for renewal.

"This is not a year to chase quick wins or risky speculation. It is a year that rewards steadiness, integrity and inner resilience. If Malaysia keeps a calm mind while adapting to change, it can come out stronger," Lee told the New Straits Times.

Drawing on a Bazi, or Four Pillars of Destiny, analysis based on Malaysia’s independence at 9.30am on 31 August 1957, Lee notes that the country carries a “Weak Yin Wood” elemental identity.

The Fire Horse year introduces intense fire energy that can strain this weaker wood element, manifesting as external pressures, political fluctuations and policy upheavals. Historically, Fire Horse years coincide with pivotal turning points, a pattern intensified by the current Period 9 cycle, also governed by fire.

Among the hazards Lee highlights are drought, forest fires, flash floods and extreme rainfall, especially from “Water-Fire clashes”.

Southern regions, including Johor, may face elevated risk due to the convergence of the Five Yellow Star and Tai Sui, traditionally linked to disruption and natural calamities. Lee emphasised the need for vigilant infrastructure planning and robust disaster preparedness.

A stabilising factor, he explained, lies in Malaysia’s current Xin Chou Great Luck cycle, where the metal element interacts with 2026’s fire to produce water — the element that nourishes weak wood.

"This is the hidden support. It means crises can be softened if decisions are measured and not reactive," he said.

Regionally, indicators remain positive. The auspicious Purple Star 9 moves into the Southeast in 2026, reinforcing Southeast Asia’s position as an economic growth hub.

"This gives Malaysia an edge. If we focus on realistic execution rather than grand promises, we can leverage regional momentum," Lee said.

From a Zi Wei Dou Shu perspective, Malaysia’s annual chart highlights the Palace of Karma (Fu De Gong), directing attention toward quality of life and psychological well-being rather than purely economic output.

The presence of finance-related stars such as Wu Qu and Tian Fu suggests a pragmatic yet uneasy society.

Lee predicts that citizens will increasingly judge leadership on implementation over rhetoric, with greater emphasis on stability, social safety nets and long-term security.

The Di Kong, or Void, star also points to elevated public anxiety, though many perceived crises may remain largely psychological if addressed with calm governance.

Globally, Lee foresees an “extreme fire” year marked by legal disputes, social friction and intensified political manoeuvring, with health challenges among senior world leaders also possible.

Economically, traditional metal-heavy sectors such as manufacturing and hardware may struggle, while the digital economy, artificial intelligence, tourism and wellness industries could see accelerated growth.

On a cultural and personal level, 2026 favours learning, reflection and inner cultivation.

The transformation of the Wen Chang star supports education, cultural development and engagement with wisdom traditions, ancient or modern.

The Lunar New Year reunion dinner on 16 February, known as Tuan Yuan Fan, will also carry heightened significance.

In a year of accelerated movement and ambition, the ritual reinforces the stabilising role of family, continuity and communal grounding.

Ultimately, Lee portrays the Red Fire Horse Year as a crucible. "Fire can destroy, but it can also refine. If Malaysia responds with a 'child-like heart' — sincere, grounded and free from greed — this challenging year can strengthen the nation’s foundations," he said.

By prioritising mental resilience, measured governance and steady adaptation, he believes Malaysia can navigate the turbulence of 2026 and advance confidently into a new era of technological and civilisational development.

Lee, a UK-trained mechanical engineer, left engineering two decades ago to pursue feng shui full-time.

Raised in Penang, he developed an early fascination with the interaction of architecture, energy and human well-being, and is now recognised for translating complex feng shui and I Ching principles into practical guidance applicable to modern life. - February 16, 2026
