DATUK Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the proposed law to limit the Prime Minister's tenure will apply to him first.

He insisted that the Bill (RUU) in question will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, and the regulation must start with him.

“It starts with me, meaning I should not make laws for others.

“The law must apply to me,” he said when met after performing Friday prayers at the Kampung Seri Cheding Mosque in Banting, today.

He said that a decade was sufficient for a leader to serve the country before giving way to new leadership.

According to him, the proposal had been raised in the previous Cabinet Meeting, and he asked that it be expedited.

“We first suggested it in the meeting, and I proposed that we expedite the proposal to limit the term of office of the Prime Minister to 10 years. Because I think that anyone who wants to serve the country sincerely, 10 years is sufficient for them to do their best.

“And after that, he should be ready to let go, so that other colleagues can continue their service,” he said.

Anwar said that if there is consensus at the next parliamentary session and the support of the majority of MPs, the matter will be implemented immediately.

Earlier, the media reported that the bill regarding the separation of the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor, as well as limiting the Prime Minister’s term to two terms, will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next Monday.

This was confirmed by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, at a meeting with editors-in-chief at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), in the capital today.

She said the second reading of both bills is scheduled to take place the following week.

Azalina will table the second reading of the bill to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor on March 2.

Anwar will table the second reading of the bill to limit the Prime Minister's term to two terms on March 3.

Also, next Monday, a briefing will be held with Members of Parliament regarding both bills at the Parliament Banquet Hall at 1 pm. – February 20, 2026
