KUALA LUMPUR – Former party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak today called for Umno division leaders and grassroots to decide themselves the party’s direction and political alignment as their annual general meeting begins today.
He said Umno should not be influenced by any individuals in setting its direction, and urged members to have the courage to voice their concerns and views.
Speaking live on his Facebook account today, Najib said that this has happened in the political scene this year, particularly regarding Umno’s alliances, be it in Barisan Nasional (BN), Muafakat Nasional (MN) or Perikatan Nasional (PN).
He also acknowledged suggestions for the party in facing the coming general election.
“For me, this (meeting) is the opportunity for leaders and grassroots to evaluate current developments and decide for themselves Umno’s direction.
“Whether they agree or not (on certain decisions), with who (they wish to cooperate), they why’s and the how’s. Voice out, debate and give your proposal.
“Umno doesn’t belong to any individual or leader. It belongs to the rakyat and the grassroots. Don’t allow any ‘wolf in a sheep’s clothing’ (musuh dalam selimut) to influence us.”
Najib said members should not be afraid to share their ideas, adding that there are no political ties more important than the one between Umno and the rakyat.
Umno divisions nationwide will be holding their annual general meeting from today until Sunday, including its wings – women, youth and Puteri – with those in the conditional and enhanced movement control order areas to be conducted virtually.
The party’s general assembly is scheduled for later this month.
Najib’s call today is expected to open the floodgates for Umno members to voice their discontent with the party leadership’s decision to work with Bersatu.
There have been multiple calls from grassroot members and even among leaders for the party to sever ties with Bersatu president and Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Rumours are also rife that Najib is among the Umno backbenchers who are pledging support for opposition leader and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to form a new government. – The Vibes, January 1, 2021
