BARISAN Nasional has rejected speculation that it is in discussions with Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and a group of leaders expelled from Bersatu, insisting no contact or membership application has been made.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, said the coalition had neither met the individuals concerned nor received any formal request to join BN or its newly introduced “Rumah Baharu” platform, an initiative championed by chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Zambry stressed that although no approach had been made, the coalition’s political framework remains open in principle.
“Our Rumah Baharu concept is open and not restricted to any particular group. It is open to political parties, all groups and possibly also non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in this country.
“Those who share the same aspirations, vision and goals in the spirit of unity may join the Rumah Baharu concept,” he said.
His remarks come amid heightened political manoeuvring following internal developments within Bersatu, but Barisan Nasional has sought to draw a clear line under suggestions of any ongoing negotiations.
On a separate matter, Zambry, who is also Higher Education Minister, called for restraint following controversy over a Pahang university student alleged to have stepped on the Quran in a social media post that went viral. He said the incident was being treated seriously and cautioned against any attempt to exploit the issue.
"We consider the matter serious, more so during the month of Ramadan. Inappropriate behaviour must be addressed promptly," he said at the same press conference.
He confirmed that the university had lodged a police report as soon as the matter surfaced online and that the authorities had acted swiftly.
"We must ensure the situation is handled properly and not manipulated by any party that may worsen it. Incidents like this can trigger unhealthy sentiments within society," he said, adding that the ministry would await the outcome of police investigations before deciding on further action.
Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah said it has established a special committee to investigate several undergraduates over a post alleged to touch on sensitivities relating to race, religion and royalty.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ts Dr Yatimah Alias said investigations into the matter, which has circulated widely on social media, are ongoing. The viral posting included an image alleging that a student from the university had stepped on the Quran. - February 25, 2026
