DRIVERS using the departure and arrival lanes at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 (T2) are being asked to familiarise themselves with a new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS), currently in a trial phase that provides a 10-minute grace period for vehicles.
According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), once the trial period ends, charges will be applied to vehicles exceeding the allotted time in these areas.
The system tracks entry and exit times using automated barriers, enabling a more structured and systematic flow of traffic.
MAHB reassured the public that no penalties or fines will be imposed during the trial, which is scheduled to continue until 30 March 2026.
“This trial aims to instil accountability in traffic management by monitoring traffic patterns and driver behaviour before the system is fully enforced,” the company stated.
MAHB Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, of, said the second phase of VAMS at T2 reflects the airport operator’s ongoing commitment to service excellence at KLIA.
“By improving traffic flow in these lanes and ensuring smoother vehicle circulation, the system supports a more seamless and safer experience for passengers as well as those dropping off or picking up travellers, especially as travel demand continues to grow,” he said.
The proactive initiative comes in response to data indicating that approximately 16,000 vehicles use the T2 lanes daily. The trial will help airport management determine optimal operational adjustments.
VAMS has already been implemented at KLIA Terminal 1 (T1) last year, achieving a significant reduction in congestion. Verified data show that fewer than one per cent of vehicles exceeded the allowed duration—about 194 of 43,000 vehicles per day.
The extension of the system to Terminal 2 is expected to deliver similar benefits, reducing wait times and enhancing overall safety.
