PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on Thursday, 19 March, focusing on the deteriorating situation in West Asia and the urgent need for de-escalation.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Anwar underscored Malaysia’s consistent position regarding the conflict, stating that he had expressed strong condemnation of Israel’s bombing of Iran, which he said was supported by the United States.

"Our discussion focused on the worsening situation in West Asia, especially during the month of Ramadan, which should be a time of peace and reflection," he said.

Both leaders reached a common understanding on the need to press for an immediate cessation of hostilities, while reinforcing the importance of diplomacy and constructive engagement to resolve the crisis.

Anwar noted that the conversation also extended to broader cooperation between Malaysia and India on international platforms, including the United Nations and BRICS, as both countries seek to amplify a collective voice on global issues.

He added that such collaboration is becoming increasingly vital in the face of mounting economic challenges worldwide, particularly those affecting food security.

"God willing, Malaysia and India will continue to strengthen our shared commitment towards global peace," he said. - March 20, 2026
