A YOUNG man has been arrested after a video showing him lighting firecrackers dangerously on a public road went viral on social media, prompting swift police action in Seri Alam near Johor Bharu.

Acting Seri Alam district police chief Victor Genason said authorities detected the 53-second video, which had been uploaded to Facebook on Saturday, and launched an investigation into the incident.

Initial findings indicated that the incident occurred at around 11pm on 18 March in the Seri Alam area.

“Acting on information, police successfully detained a 21-year-old local man at about 11pm on Saturday in Kampung Pasir Putih here.

“A check on past records found that the suspect has no prior criminal record,” he said in a statement.

The suspect was apprehended at Kampung Pasir Putih later that same night, following information gathered by the police.

Victor said the case is being investigated under Section 286 of the Penal Code, which relates to negligent conduct involving explosive substances.

Police have urged the public to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information regarding the incident, emphasising the importance of allowing investigations to proceed fairly.

“Public cooperation is greatly appreciated to ensure that the investigation can be carried out thoroughly and fairly,” he said. - March 22, 2026
