A 42-YEAR-OLD unemployed man has been formally charged with attempting to kill his wife in an incident at their Perak home last month, court proceedings revealed on Wednesday.

Mohd Yusof Mat Yatim is accused of pressing a pillow over the face of his 38-year-old wife, Nur Syazwana Mohd Talaha, at their residence on Jalan Persiaran Raya 1, Taman Changkat Lada Raya, Seberang Perak, Kampung Gajah, Perak Tengah, around 9 a.m. on 25 March, 2025.

According to the charge, he knowingly carried out an act that could have resulted in his wife’s death, an offence under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a fine, or up to 20 years if the act causes grievous bodily harm.

The accused, who is a father of three, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out through an interpreter before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.

Prosecutor Inspector Zahira Musa requested that bail be denied, citing the defendant’s aggressive behaviour during investigations.

“The accused has displayed aggression throughout the investigation and previously attempted to jump from the fourth floor,” she said.

The court granted the prosecution’s request, remanding the suspect in custody, and set 4 May for the next hearing to allow the defendant to appoint legal representation.

This case highlights ongoing concerns around domestic violence in Malaysia and the judicial system’s careful handling of high-risk defendants. - April 1, 2026
