JOHOR BARU – Having made early preparations for the new school term, a mother of seven is saddened to learn that her children’s school items were washed away by floodwaters on New Year’s Day.

Diana Zafini Mohamad Faruddin, 30, from Kg Laut near Skudai, has four children in primary school, aged between 8 and 12, and a child in Form Three.

“I’m so sad… all my children’s school items, like shoes and uniforms, are gone.

“I pity my children… that was all we had, we can’t afford to buy new ones,” the housewife told Bernama at the SK Batu 10 relief centre here yesterday.

However, she thanked the state government and relevant agencies for providing shelter to her family, including her youngest child, who is just 5 months old.

Her mother-in-law, Marmiah Tompok, 63, said the floods this time around are the worst yet.

“My house has been flooded several times. All our belongings could not be saved.”

Kg Laut is among the areas severely affected by flooding in the state. As at 8pm yesterday, Johor had 1,780 flood victims in five districts. – Bernama, January 3, 2021
