PETROLIAM Nasional Berhad (Petronas) will negotiate with Russia to purchase oil to ensure the country maintains sufficient fuel supplies.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that, for now, many European countries and the United States, which previously blocked Russia, have to scramble to buy oil from the country.
“Fortunately, our relationship with Russia is still good, so the PETRONAS team can negotiate with Russia,” he said after opening the New Terminal at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) today.
Anwar said that so far, the supply of petrol is guaranteed until June.
“The Australian Prime Minister came to Malaysia two days ago, asking for cooperation on petrol, diesel and fertiliser.
“My answer is, we can help friendly countries, but our focus is on our country’s needs.
“If there is more, we will discuss helping. Why do we need to be good with Australia?
“This is because we need its phosphate fertiliser for our plantations, especially the palm oil plantations owned by FELDA.
“We also have an oil processing plant in Australia.
“That is why we need to maintain international relations and negotiate well,” he said. – April 18, 2026
