A DISABLED man was found dead in a bathroom after a fire tore through a rented lodging room along Jalan Tukang Besi early this morning, with authorities confirming the blaze was swiftly contained but proved fatal for the occupant.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Control Centre said the victim, identified as Johnathan Goh Yow Chyang, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer.

“A fire engine from Sibu Sentral Fire and Rescue Station, with a strength of 10 personnel and machinery, was dispatched to the location after receiving an emergency call at 6.53am.

“The fire was found to have occurred in a room on the ground floor, which was completely destroyed, and an inspection discovered a man inside the bathroom area,” the spokesperson said in a statement today.

According to the spokesperson, the flames were brought under control at 6.58am, and the operation concluded at 8.40am.

The victim’s body was subsequently handed over to the police for further action. - April 18, 2026
