IRAN has reimposed restrictions on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz today, escalating tensions with the United States after Washington confirmed its blockade of Iranian ports would continue.
The country’s joint military command announced that “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state ... under strict management and control of the armed forces,” signalling a reversal of any easing measures.
AP reported on Saturday that Tehran made clear that the renewed blockade is directly tied to U.S. actions, warning it would continue to block transit through the strategic waterway for as long as American restrictions remain in force.
The move follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said the blockade “will remain in full force” until Iran agrees to a deal with Washington, including terms related to its nuclear programme.
