A WOMAN was sentenced to a day in jail and fined RM13,000, in addition to having her driving licence suspended for two years, by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Court for driving under the influence of alcohol and running a red light.

She caused an accident at the Jalan Genting Klang traffic light intersection, here, yesterday.

The court also ordered the 42-year-old accused to serve six months in jail if she fails to pay the fine.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said this after the woman pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Earlier in the incident at around 8.22 pm yesterday, he said, the accident involved a BMW X1 car driven by the woman and a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle ridden by a local man with a pillion.

He said that initial investigations found that the woman is believed to have failed to stop at a red traffic light and hit a motorcycle.

"As a result of the accident, the 22-year-old motorcyclist suffered minor injuries involving swelling in the right knee, while the pillion passenger, who is a 15-year-old girl, and the driver of the car were not injured," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Zamzuri said results of an alcohol test conducted on the woman recorded a reading of 183 milligrams/100 millilitres.

Following that, he said policr opened an investigation paper under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and the woman pleaded guilty when brought to court today.

However, he said that further investigations were still being conducted into the case under Section 42(1) of the same act.
