A FAMILY picnic ended in tragedy when a young girl was found drowned at Taman Eko Rimba Jeram Toi, with authorities believing she had slipped into a pool at the recreational site.

Jelebu district police chief Azizan Said said officers were alerted to the incident at 5.44pm by a 38-year-old local man, who is also a member of the Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia.

“Preliminary investigations found that the victim had come to the location with family members for a picnic. At the time of the incident, the victim and her mother are believed to have slipped and fallen into the pool.

“The victim’s mother managed to save herself, while the victim sank to the bottom of the pool. Her mother informed that the child could not swim,” he said in a statement.

With the assistance of members of the public at the scene, the child was located at the bottom of the pool and rushed to Hospital Jelebu for emergency treatment.

She was later pronounced dead at 2.58pm.

Azizan said a post-mortem examination would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, adding that the case has been classified as a sudden death report. - May 3, 2026
