Minor earthquake shakes Kundasang as residents report feeling tremors
A weak earthquake struck the Kundasang area in Sabah on Tuesday morning - June 3, 2026

RESIDENTS in parts of Sabah reported feeling mild tremors on Tuesday morning after a weak earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale struck near Kundasang in the Ranau district.

According to a statement issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the earthquake occurred at 10.36am and was detected at coordinates 6.1 degrees north and 116.6 degrees east.

The epicentre was located approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Ranau at a depth of 10 kilometres, indicating a relatively shallow seismic event.

MetMalaysia said the tremors could be felt in several areas across the state and confirmed that it would continue monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, a number of Facebook users reported experiencing the tremor at around 10.36am, with social media posts emerging shortly after the earthquake was recorded.

No reports of damage or injuries were immediately available following the incident. - June 3, 2026
