PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the Election Commission (EC) to discharge its duties in a professional, independent and transparent manner as campaigning officially begins for the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.
He said the campaign period has commenced following the dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly and the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly, which received the consent of the Sultan of Johor and the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, and must be conducted in a disciplined and responsible manner.
“So now, when the campaign has started, I hope it is well managed and the EC must carry out its responsibilities properly and independently so that the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections can proceed smoothly,” he said.
Anwar also reminded all contesting parties to comply with electoral regulations and uphold ethical conduct throughout the campaign period to ensure the democratic process proceeds smoothly.
“I also had a chance to speak with colleagues after the Cabinet meeting, and I hope they will also observe the rules and respect campaign ethics,” he said when speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Al-Hidayah in Kuala Lumpur.
The Election Commission has set polling day for the 16th Johor state election on 11 July, while polling for the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election is scheduled for 1 August. - June 12, 2026
