A 31-YEAR-OLD man suffered burn injuries after a fierce overnight fire engulfed three houses and partially damaged a surau in Kampung Lubok Setol near Rantau Panjang, in one of the district’s most destructive residential fires in recent months.

The blaze, which erupted shortly before midnight, rapidly spread through the village, reducing three homes to ashes and damaging a nearby place of worship before firefighters succeeded in bringing the situation under control.

The victim sustained burns to both legs during the incident and was later taken to hospital for further treatment.

Rantau Panjang Fire and Rescue Station chief Hamzah Musa said emergency crews were alerted to the fire at 11.51pm and immediately dispatched a response team to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire already burning intensely and threatening surrounding structures.

"There were three houses completely destroyed and a surau sustained 10 per cent damage. While carrying out firefighting operations, we were informed that a man had suffered burn injuries.

"The man had already exited the house before seeking further treatment at Hospital Pasir Mas," BH quoted hims saying when contacted today.

In addition to the destruction of the residential properties, a Proton Waja parked in the area was also consumed by the fire.

A total of 11 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze and prevent it from spreading further through the village.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire, and investigations are expected to be conducted to determine how the incident started.

The full extent of the financial losses has yet to be assessed, but the destruction left several families displaced as emergency responders worked through the night to secure the affected area. - June 14, 2026
