PAKATAN Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on political parties to ensure the Johor state election remains a contest of policies and political parties, warning against attempts to involve the Malay Rulers in partisan campaigning.
Speaking at the announcement of PH candidates for the 16th Johor state election on Monday evening, the Prime Minister said all political actors must respect the constitutional limits governing Malaysia's system of constitutional monarchy.
"This state election involves political parties. Do not try to associate it with any other party. That is my advice.
"In a constitutional monarchy, there are boundaries. If there are problems or disagreements, we should resolve them through proper discussions," he said.
Anwar stressed that preserving a healthy relationship between the Federal Government and the Malay Rulers, particularly the Johor royal institution, remains an important national priority.
He revealed that he had earlier met Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail in Kuala Lumpur, describing the audience as cordial and conducted in a spirit of mutual respect.
"The meeting reflected the good relationship between both parties.
"Earlier today, Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail came to Kuala Lumpur, and I had an audience with him. Why? Because our relationship with the Malay Rulers must remain strong.
"Previously, Tunku Mahkota Ismail said that PMX is his friend. Who am I? I am just a village boy… I only married Azizah.
"But a Regent regards me as a friend. That is why when Tunku Mahkota came to Kuala Lumpur and said he wished to grant me an audience, I accepted it with great respect," he said.
Anwar's remarks come amid the opening stages of campaigning for the Johor state election, as political parties prepare for nomination on June 27, ahead of early voting on July 7 and polling day on July 11.
His message underscored the need to keep electoral competition focused on democratic contestation between rival political coalitions while safeguarding the neutrality and constitutional role of the monarchy. - June 23, 2026
