GEORGE TOWN – A policeman suffered minor injuries after he was hit by a car allegedly driven by a former DAP state assemblyman here at a traffic light in Jalan Thean Teik, Air Itam last night.

It is believed that the driver was an assemblyman who served from 2008 to 2013 and is a special officer to one of the members of parliament.

Both the former assemblyman and MP could not be reached for comment.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said the lance corporal officer is now reported to be in stable condition, now being treated at the Yellow Zone in Penang General Hospital.

According to Soffian, in the incident at 11.30pm, the 27-year-old victim who was riding a motorcycle alone was hit from the back by a car driven by a 55-year-old man.

“Preliminary investigations found that the retiree who was driving a Toyota Camry car was coming from downtown towards Balik Pulau. While at the traffic light in front of a supermarket, a motorcyclist suddenly swerved out. The incident caused the driver to be shocked, and he tried to dodge but collided with the motorcyclist instead.”

Soffian said both driver and motorcyclist have valid driving licenses.

“We are investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

Earlier, the photo was widely shared on social media as it was alleged that the former assemblyman was allegedly involved in the accident driving under the influence.

The comment drew flak from the public who linked the incident to politics, as well as the lack of responsibility among politicians. – The Vibes, January 5, 2021
