KHAIRY Jamaluddin's re-entry into Umno continues to spark various political speculations ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election (PRN).

The question now no longer seems to be whether he will contest, but rather which seat he will be placed in.

After playing an active role in helping the Barisan Nasional (BN) campaign in the recent Johor state election, more observers see Khairy (KJ) as one of Umno's important assets to face the Negeri Sembilan PRN.

In fact, there is a view that he has the potential to be appointed as the state's BN "poster boy" following his increasingly accepted performance within the party.

Although some expect the former Rembau MP to return to contest in the area that was once his stronghold, current political developments have opened up space for several other options that are seen as more strategic.

The Gemas state seat is expected to be hot ahead of the PRN on August 1, and according to insiders, KJ’s nomination for the seat would apparently increase BN's chances of winning the state.

The Gemas DUN has a composition of voters of various races that are seen as befitting Khairy's national image and experience as a former senior minister.

Questions about Khairy's position in politics began to circulate after he was accepted to rejoin Umno after being sacked three years ago.

However, he reportedly said that he was more comfortable being a campaign vehicle than contesting as a candidate in the Negeri Sembilan state election since he had just rejoined Umno.

However, he said, the matter was subject to the decision of the party leadership.

Apart from Gemas, the Rantau DUN is also being mentioned as a potential.

However, some believe that Khairy should return to the Rembau constituency, the location where he built most of his political career before losing in the 15th General Election.

The long-standing relationship with the local machinery and high recognition among voters continue to be an advantage if Umno chooses this approach.

Insiders believe that the selection of the seat for Khairy is not just a matter of winning chances, but also carries a larger message about the direction of Umno's reforms and the party's preparations to form the future leadership line-up.

However, state leaders have since brushed off news of KJ’s comeback as mere speculation and believe it is too soon for him to make a political comeback.

BN has confirmed it will contest all 36 state seats in the Negeri Sembilan election.– July 15, 2026
