A MECHANIC was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and seven strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Pasir Mas, Kelantan today after pleading guilty to two charges of raping and robbing a 15-year-old girl in Tumpat last June.

The accused, Muhammad Faryzuan Aiman Mat Yatim, 23, admitted to the charges after they were read before Judge Zulkpli Abdullah.

On the first charge, the accused was charged with raping the 15-year-old girl and causing her injury in a bushy area at Kampung Mesra Palekbang, Tumpat, at 7:40 am on 17 June. He was charged under Section 376(2)(a) of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 376(2) of the same Code, which carries a prison term of up to 20 years and whipping.

On the second charge, the accused was charged with robbing the same victim of a Vivo Y19 mobile phone while armed with a wooden stick at the same location. The charge was brought under Section 392 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Aisyha Nai'lah Harizan, whilst the accused was unrepresented.

Earlier, Siti Aisyha Nai'lah requested an appropriate sentence, considering the public interest factor to serve as a lesson to the accused and the public to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

She stated that the offences committed by the accused were serious and cruel, involving rape and robbery that caused fear and trauma to the victim.

"The injuries suffered by the victim were also serious and severe, alongside experiencing severe trauma. The victim had no prior relationship with the accused and was dressed modestly in Muslimah attire whilst exercising on the day of the incident," she said.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Faryzuan Aiman appealed for a minimum sentence, informing the court that he has a wife and a three-year-old child.

The court subsequently sentenced the accused to 15 years’ imprisonment and five strokes of the cane for the rape charge, and five years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane for the robbery charge.

The custodial sentences are to run consecutively, commencing from the date of the accused's arrest on 7 July.

The court also ordered the accused to undergo counselling throughout his imprisonment and to be placed under police supervision for three years following the completion of his sentence.

It was previously reported that a teenage girl's jogging session turned into tragedy when she was robbed and raped by an unfamiliar man in Palekbang near Pasir Mas.

The 15-year-old victim was found injured near a bushy area by members of the public at 11:00am before being rushed to hospital for medical treatment. - July 20, 2026
