A WOMAN in Tangkak suffered losses of RM170,000 after being deceived by a phone scammer who impersonated a police officer and falsely claimed she was involved in a money laundering case.

Tangkak District Police Chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the victim, a 51-year-old food shop assistant, was contacted by the suspect at 10.24am on July 8, who accused her of being linked to illegal activities.

He said the suspect then convinced the victim to make payments purportedly required for investigation purposes.

"Believing the suspect’s claims, the victim carried out 11 transactions into eight separate accounts suspected to be mule accounts, as instructed by the individual," he said in a statement.

Roslan said the victim only realised she had been deceived before lodging a police report at the Tangkak District Police Headquarters yesterday.

He added that investigations were ongoing, with the case being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

"Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant against becoming victims of scams and are encouraged to obtain information on such syndicates through the official social media platforms of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department," he said. - July 30, 2026
