PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has invited distinguished Indian historian Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, to visit Malaysia in the first quarter of next year to deliver a public lecture on democracy, peace, harmony and values-based leadership.
The invitation was extended during a telephone conversation between the two long-time acquaintances, during which they discussed strengthening the historical and civilisational relationship between Malaysia and India through greater academic and intellectual engagement.
“I invited him to visit Malaysia in the first quarter of next year to deliver a lecture and share his views on democracy, peace, harmony and values-based leadership with scholars, university students and community leaders,” Anwar said in a Facebook post today.
The Prime Minister said they also reminisced about their meeting at a conference on democracy in Asia organised by Rajmohan in Mumbai in 2012.
“We also exchanged views on efforts to strengthen the historical and civilisational relationship between Malaysia and India through academic cooperation, intellectual engagement and dialogue between civilisations.
“May this long-standing friendship continue to grow stronger,” he said.
Rajmohan Gandhi is an acclaimed historian, biographer and public intellectual who has written extensively on South Asian history, democracy, conflict resolution and the legacies of his grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi.
His proposed visit is expected to enhance intellectual discourse in Malaysia while reinforcing bilateral ties through greater collaboration in education, research and intercultural dialogue between the two countries. - August 1, 2026
