WHAT began as another day at school ended with a mother rushing her 15-year-old son to hospital, where doctors warned that injuries sustained in an alleged bullying incident could leave him with hearing problems.
Nurhaswaty Zamani, 43, said her only son, Adryz Adrian, suffered injuries to his head and right ear after he was allegedly attacked by a group of students at a secondary school in Shah Alam.
She said she only found out what had happened when Adryz returned home last Wednesday and finally told her about the incident.
“My son did not tell me anything on Tuesday. Maybe he was afraid.
“It was only when he came home from school the next day, perhaps because he could no longer bear the pain, that he told me what had happened,” she said at a press conference today.
Nurhaswaty said her husband immediately went to the school to meet the principal and discipline teacher before taking Adryz to hospital.
The teenager underwent several examinations, including scans and hearing tests, after suffering pain, swelling and ringing in his right ear.
Nurhaswaty said doctors subsequently warned that the injury could affect his hearing.
She said his hearing remained impaired during two screening tests, although his condition had improved slightly after receiving treatment.
Adryz is now undergoing regular medical follow-ups and has been given two weeks’ medical leave to recover at home.
The family is also concerned about the psychological impact of the alleged assault.
Nurhaswaty said her son had been referred to a psychiatrist and had become noticeably quieter and more withdrawn since the incident.
“He used to be cheerful and active in sports. Now he is quiet and spends more time alone,” she stressed.
Nurhaswaty also claimed that Adryz had been subjected to harassment by the same group of students since Form One.
She said previous incidents had gone unreported to her, with details only emerging after the latest incident came to light.
Earlier reports said Adryz was allegedly attacked at about 8.30 am while walking to class, when he was punched from behind on his right ear before falling.
The family also alleged that he had previously been choked, slammed onto a concrete floor and kicked in the head.
Nurhaswaty said the situation had left her deeply upset, particularly because her son had gone to school in good health.
“As a mother, I am very disappointed. I sent my son to school healthy, but he came home with injuries like this.
“I hope there will be no more incidents like this. When something happens, the school must act quickly and address it,” she added.
She also called on the Education Ministry to take stronger action against bullying, saying such cases could have lasting consequences for children and their families.
Meanwhile, the family’s legal adviser Datuk Azar Irwan Arifin said the family planned to pursue civil action against the alleged attacker and the student’s parents or guardians.
He said the claim would include damages for Adryz’s injuries and medical expenses, as well as exemplary damages to be determined by the court.
Azar Irwan said schools should be places where children feel safe, rather than places they fear going to.
“When incidents like this happen, children who simply want to go to school and learn can become afraid.
“Any damages awarded should also serve as a lesson to prevent similar incidents from happening again,” the lawyer said. – August 18, 2026
